Try freediving

A gym for the spirit

Freediving isn’t swimming. It isn’t even diving. It’s training to stay calm.

Anger eats your air. So does irritation. If you can’t calm down, you don’t dive. Meditate or surface.

You don’t force a dive. You let go into it. Every dive should feel light and easy. So should life.

The instructor manual says: tell students what to do, not what to avoid. We aren’t teaching freediving. We teach stillness and composure. Control. The deepest control is letting go of it.

When something strange comes up, you relax your mind and drop through it. You fall through the walls inside you without flinching. They dissolve.

When you dive, your character stays on the surface. You sink out of its world into yourself. The mind stops feeding you lines.

The best dive is when you move without thought and think without words. Meditators call it samadhi — you simply disappear.

The depth washes out everything you don’t need. Then you choose what to let back in.

Try freediving. It’s a gym for the spirit.

Free as in freedom.
